Taco Bell Advertising Margaritas Sending the Wrong Message

Recently it has come to substance abuse prevention coalition's attention that our local Taco Bells are advertising Margaritas on their menu.  These are formally known as a Frutista Freeze.  They've added Margarita to the name this year, hoping to spark more interest.

Prevention communities across the country are concerned about the message this is sending our children.  These so-called "family-friendly" places are plastering "Margaritas For Sale" all over their marketing materials.

In our Sunday paper recently, in a Taco Bell Advertisement it had an ad with the coupons for the Margarita Frutista Freeze . The whole advertisement, it is very clear what word they want you to focus on--the Margarita.

While the products do not contain Tequila, the alcoholic ingredient that makes this drink a real Margarita, it is advertised as such.  This can confuse the consumer and it is false advertising.  It also opens the door for children to try the real thing, thinking this sweet, fruity drink is as harmless as the non-alcoholic drink.

One easy step to combat this is to call the customer complaint line at 1800TacoBell, or go to www.tacobell.com  and click Contact Us, and enter your complaint.  Or a letter can be sent to their address:

If they have enough of these, they will start to take notice.  Get your coalitions involved in this.

Thank you.
